Equinix now offers higher-bandwidth direct connections to Amazon Web Services (AWS) that the colocation provider says better supports enterprises’ hybrid cloud workloads.
“This is ideal for hybrid cloud where a part of the workload is sitting in colo and a part of the workload is sitting in AWS public cloud,” said Kaushik Joshi, global managing director of strategic alliances at Equinix.
Equinix previously offered private, hosted connections to AWS on Equinix Cloud Exchange Fabric (EXC Fabric) — this is Equinix’s SDN-enabled interconnection platform — but only at speeds up to 500 Mb/s. Higher speeds has been ECX Fabric customers’ No. 1 most requested capability, Joshi said.
Under the new AWS Direct Connect Service Delivery program, Equinix customers can use hosted connections with 1 Gb/s, 2 Gb/s, 5 Gb/s, and 10 Gb/s capacities on ECX Fabric. AWS Direct Connect partners can programmatically automate the network connection between an enterprise’s on-premises environment, such as Equinix, to their AWS virtual private cloud environment.
The data center giant already offered similar high-speed direct connections to Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. With the AWS addition, Equinix now boasts high-bandwidth connectivity to all three of the top cloud providers.
The new program will benefit enterprises’ workloads that require lower latency and higher bandwidth such as databases that use AWS tools or migrating on-premises VMware and SAP workloads to AWS, Joshi said. “Business continuity and disaster recovery, where your primary is sitting in an Equinix colocation facility but your secondary is sitting in a public cloud like AWS is another case where you will also need a higher bandwidth,” he added.
Additionally, AWS reduced its pricing on 500 Mb/s and below direct connections.
The ECX Fabric went global in April in 37 markets across five continents. Currently the AWS Direct Connect program is live in 15 markets (California’s Silicon Valley; Osaka, Japan; Frankfurt; Paris; Chicago; Tokyo; Amsterdam; Seattle; Singapore; Los Angeles; London; Miami; Dallas; Sydney; and Ashburn, Virginia), with 10 more in progress. These are Hong Kong; New York; Madrid; Stockholm; Sao Paulo; Helsinki; Dublin; Toronto; Warsaw, Poland; and Melbourne, Australia. Joshi said these should go live in the next few weeks.
Earlier this week, Verizon said it is providing its business customers with direct access between their MPLS and colocation facilities within EXC Fabric. This software-defined interconnect service can reduce costs associated with purely private networks, the operator said.
