After releasing its earnings report today, the London-based carrier said it will “pause” buying Huawei equipment for its core mobile networks in Europe while Western governments work to clear up security concerns, according to media reports. Vodafone CEO Nick Read said there’s too much “noise” around Huawei. He didn’t, however, rule out Huawei from its other big markets including Turkey, India, and several African countries. Other operators including BT and Orange have already removed Huawei’s equipment or taken steps to limit its future use in some European Markets, and Deutsche Telekom is also reviewing its Huawei purchases. The embattled vendor also faces scrutiny from operators in the U.S. AT&T backed out of what was expected to be a ground-breaking deal with Hauwei last year to sell the China-based vendor’s smartphones. And last month T-Mobile US and Sprint received approval from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) for their proposed $26 billion merger — but only after both companies agreed to not use Huawei equipment. Vodafone’s announcement comes as several Western governments including the United States and Germany consider bans against Huawei telecom equipment. On a call with reporters, Read said such bans would create a “significant delay” for carriers’ 5G deployments and have a “significant implication” for related costs.
